Saarburg is a very lovely town, along the river Saar and nestled in Saar wine region famous for some excellent Riesling. There is a lot to see and to do in town and in the area, so we hope you will take a few extra days to explore and enjoy the scenery, the food and the wine!
Saarburg and its surrounding region are especially attractive and are more than worth a visit: from the "Little Venice" central area of the town with its charming canal and roaring waterfall, to the Castle towering the town and down to the river Saar that in just a few Kilometers from here will merge into the Moselle. The town is nestled among steep hills the produce an excellent Riesling. This was an area occupied by the Romans in ancient times and there are some Roman vestiges that can be visited, villas, forts and in the city of Trier (the Roman Treviri) several sites like the Porta Nigra and the Amphitheater.
The region is also a nature lover paradise with plenty to explore, including hiking on the hills and in the woods and the possibility of taking long bike rides along the Saar. A close-by site (15 kms.) that we highly recommend is the Saar Schleife, with its dramatic vistas over the loop in the river.
Also worth a visit are Mettlach, located at the bottom of the valley, famous for being the home of world renown ceramic makers, Villeroy & Boch and Saarlouis, declared a World Heritage Site by the Unesco with its fortified walls and charming town center.
Luxembourg City and www.saarburg.de/weinMetz are also within half and hour to an hour driving distance respectively and will impress you for their stunning architecture, historic sites, panoramic lookouts and lots and lots of culture. If you love contemporary art, do not miss to visit the Centre Pompidou in Metz, with its stunning architecture and interesting installations.
