The basics done well are the basis for dancing tango.
Good posture, a comfortable embrace, good balance, a smooth, precise and energetic walk, a clear lead and an active following. All this on the music and with the music.
This is tango for us!
We invite you to undertake our journey of embrace and musicality.
Like Antonio always loves to tell his students: Tango is danced from the waist up, with your heart, with the embrace and with the music. For those who want to learn or improve their tango, to make it creative and personal, respecting the couple and the dance floor, a tango which is not made of steps, but of emotions.
Antonio and Francesca teach a tango that although respectful of the milonguero and salon traditions incorporates innovative concepts giving both leader and follower a central role in the dance.
Posture, walking, connection in the embrace and musicality are the pillars of their teachings.
The goal is to teach their students how to achieve a tango that is totally creative and respectful of the dance-floor. In their classes Antonio also focuses at explaining in a clear way what does it mean to "lead" ("la marca"), how to communicate with the partner by never using the hands or the arms, always with the entire embrace: a dancer who can properly lead will free himself and his partner from set figures and steps achieving a truly creative and blissful dance.
Our story:
Antonio Martinez and Francesca Bertelli dance and teach together since 2010. Their tango paths started in their respective cities, Buenos Aires (Argentina) and New York (USA) and developed through the encounters with pivotal tango maestros and on the pistas of the traditional milongas of Buenos Aires.
Antonio is originally from Tucuman, in the north of Argentina, but moved as a child to Buenos Aires and there he lived most of his life. In 1994 he encountered tango and started taking lessons with Cristina Pugni, one of the stars of the original cast of the show “Forever Tango” and later with Daniel Bo, a top dancer both on stage and in the social scene. Over the years Antonio has had the opportunity to study under the directions of several of the most prominent dancers and teachers like Jorge Firpo, Coca y Osvaldo, Natacha Poberaj, Fabián Peralta, Hector Falcon, Edit Paez, Gabriela Elias & Eduardo Perez, and Carlos Gavito. Significant to his growth as a teacher were the classes he taught at "Cosquin en la peña" organized by the musician Ica Novo in 2001, at Club Bohemios (La Boca) in 2002, and at Club Español (La Plata). In 2005-2006 he collaborated and taught for Unitango. He has also assisted Oscar Casas in his classes at Region Leonesa and Fernando Lores in his classes at Maipu 444.
In addition to all the formal training he received, what he considered his real “School” have been the traditional milongas, like Cachirulo and "Lujos en El Beso" where he had the opportunity to dance, since his early days, with all the best milongueras of Buenos Aires. He thus developed a truly personal style, very musical and playful, something that he transmits to his students who are encouraged to always find their OWN tango.
What is tango for Antonio?
"El tango es la vida misma que se manifiesta en un sentimiento declarado con el abrazo, un camino que va con la musica, corazon a corazon, y lo sentido, es muy particular; es un secreto sagrado entre dos. Es un " amor " de tres minutos que se eterniza en el alma. Ojos cerrados y un guia. Es un dialogo sin palabras, siempre nuevo y profundo."
Translation.: "Tango is life itself which is expressed in a feeling declared with an embrace, a walk that goes with the music, heart to heart, and the sensitiveness is very special, it is a sacred secret between two beings. It is a "love" that lasts three minutes that lasts forever in the soul, with eyes closed and a guide. It is a dialog without words, always new and deep.”
Francesca is originally from Tuscany, Italy, but started dancing tango in New York where she lived for a large portion of her life. In early 2007 she traveled to Buenos Aires for the first time and she discovered the magic of tango milonguero. Under the instruction of Monica Paz and after dancing every night in the traditional milongas with the old milongueros, she decided to start bringing “that” tango to the New York tangueros. Thanks to her activity as an organizer, she had the opportunity to further study with Monica when she traveled to New York, also assisting her in her lessons, and with maestros like Raul Cabral, Maxi Gluzman and Maria Olivera & Gustavo Benzecry Sabá.
In 2009, during one of her frequent trips to the Tango Capitol (Buenos Aires) she met Antonio Martinez while dancing at the El Beso. In 2010 they married in Buenos Aires and moved to Montecatini Terme, Italy.
After moving to Italy Antonio and Francesca founded FrAnTango Buenos Aires. Together they started teaching group lessons in Montecatini Terme and Florence and also organized a very popular "encuentro milonguero" in Montecatini from 2011 to 2015. During this time, they also traveled regularly to teach in various cities around Italy and made several trips to the United Kingdom to teach in London, Bristol and Manchester.
In 2011 they also started traveling to Germany, where they held regular workshops in Saarbrücken (the “Tango Mania” program at “acting & arts") and participated as guest teachers at the Tango Sommer Festival in Wiesbaden.
In October 2014, Antonio and Francesca decided to move to Saarbrücken upon the invitation of their many students who had started following them during their regular visits with the Tango Mania Program.
In 2015, together with a group of students, they founded the Zentrum für argentinische Kultur in Saarbrücken offering a full program of tango classes, practicas, milongas and special workshops, also with invited teachers. In September 2017 the Zentrum is hosting a four-day Milonguero Festival in Saarbrücken, (14, 15, 16, 17, September) with documentaries, workshops, milongas with the participation of well known guest teachers from Buenos Aires.
In 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 they have been invited by Metzville Tango to teach their regular year-long classes for beginners and advanced dancers.
In 2017-2018 Antonio & Francesca have taught regular lessons in Pont-á-Mousson in cooperation with the local association "Aller Danser."
Besides teaching regular classes in Saarbrücken, Antonio and Francesca travel to other cities in Germany, France and the UK to teach workshops and perform at milongas.
